Palin draws crowd of 60,000 in The Villages

The Villages, a vast, upscale planned community north of Orlando, has about 70,000 mostly adult residents — many of them military retirees — who vote reliably Republican in statewide races. Tens of thousands inched along roads into the picturesque town square of the complex, where they stood in sweltering heat for about four hours as local GOP officials and a country band revved up the crowd.

“Sa-Rah! Sa-Rah!” they chanted at every mention of her name, applauding loudly and waiving tiny American flags that were distributed — along with free water bottles — by local volunteers. The fire chief estimated the crowd at 60,000.

Admiring throngs mobbed the Palin family’s arrival and departure, snapping souvenir pictures. Autograph seekers thrust campaign signs, caps with the McCain-Palin logo and copies of magazines with her face on their covers, and the Palins responded warmly.

A massive crowd of senior citizens waiting four hours in the hot sun is a good reminder that SENIORS VOTE! And Obama’s ageist attacks on John McCain, not to mention the wholesome appeal of Sarah Palin are a double whammy that gives McCain the edge among seniors in many polls.

But it’s not just seniors turning out for McCain and Palin. Massive crowds are the rule, not the exception.

so they are getting the real backbone of america out for the rallies. good, goes to show the obama robots that the mccain palin ticket can do the same. his attacks on their age and sex is making them look even worse. the young tend to be ignorant and reject the thoguhts of the seniors of our country, they think they know better, but you have to have the ties to the past the make it in the future. these seniors have seen far more and experienced real hardship in their lives and they know about hard work and honesty. they can’t stand the bs lies and innuendo that the dems are throwing out there and the way they are treating the repub ticket pisses them off.

At the risk of sounding old fashioned, this showing of support for Gov. Sarah Palin is RIGHT ON!

By comparison, look at how many attended one of Michelle Obama’s recent speeches: http://www.flickr.com/photos/althouse/2879559204

I know, I know, Mrs. Obama isn’t running for anything, but it still makes for an interesting comparison.

Um…..I was there – front and center, and I’m NOT a senior citizen who lives in the Villages! :)
I did however, grow up in this area, when “The Villages” was a cow pasture!
Please go to my blog at http://www.littlesistersdolls.blogspot.com for my review and awesome CLOSE UP pics!
Not only did I get to stand about 8 – 10 ft from her while she spoke, but I also got autographs from Sarah and her family, and she shook my hand and told me she would pray for my son who is in the Army, after I’d told her that I was praying for her boy. Todd repeated the same message to me as he stopped by to sign my ticket.

I was there too. I had the sign that read OUR LIPSTICK BEATS THEIR DIPSTICK.

It was great, I only wish she would have come to the back of the stage. I drove from Clearwater Florida about 2 hrs away.

Janelle and Lisa,

I don’t like either one of you anymore.

Not at all.

Unless, of course, you got me a Sarah Palin autograph. In which case, all will be forgiven.

Aye Chihuahua..

LOL….I had to get there at 7 a.m. and stand in the heat fighting for my spot in line until they let us through the metal detectors at noon. Once we got into the area where we were in front of the stage, we couldn’t move until the rally was over, so it got PRETTY dang hot!
I’ll never forget it – can’t wait to write my son who is in boot camp tomorrow and tell him what THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES SAID TO HIS MAMA! :)

Craig…thanks for visting my blog – I’ve had more hits on there today than I’ve ever had in one day!

I’m a little biased when it comes to the name Sarah anyway – my Mamaw’s name was Sarah, and she was such an awesome woman, I named my firstborn after her! :)

Janelle,

I’m really glad that you got that opportunity.

September 30, 2006 my sons (15 and 9 at the time) and I got the opportunity to go see President Bush speak.

Then, because I had kept my ear to the ground the week before, the three of us went to the other side of town and staked out the place where the President ate lunch and then had an interview with Sean Hannity.

The Secret Service had the limo parked in the street not ten feet from where we were standing in the crowd. We were hoping for just a glimpse or a wave.

Well, it was better than that.

The President worked the rope line and we got to shake his hand.

My now eleven year old remembers that day fondly every time we ride down the street where that happened.

In addition, we met, and had our picture made, with Karl Rove.

The minimum age for residency in the Villages is 55. I suppose it was either water aerobics class or a Palin rally…”well dear, let’s see… which would be more fun?” Perhaps aging McCain has purchased a fourth home there for his retirement. Then again perhaps Sarah Palin was there to preach abstinence to the elderly since the “Village” people seem to have above normal instances of the clap: http://www.wftv.com/news/9275560/detail.html

Let’s get real. How many end up showing up for a rally is not particularly newsworthy. Its what they are saying, what they stand for. Why do people find significance in the ridiculously trivial? It is not a sign that Palin has pushed the McCain campaign over the top. Its a cynically crafted PR event.

WE DESERVE BETTER

Janelle, thanks for sharing your experience and God Bless your son. I was a Navy mom during the Persian Gulf war and my nephew did his 15 months in Iraq. It’s tough, stay strong and be proud!

OlMoney, I detected a bit of snobbery in your post, that’s too bad. Your attitude reminds me of an old curmudgeon too stiff to have a good time because, let’s face it, you appear to be a snob.

60,000 showed up because they believe in what this ticket stands for and gave them a rousing show of support and obviously had a damn good time. Good for them!

Olmoney – you’re right about ONE thing – one must be 55 to live inside The Villages. BUT – one does not become decrepid just because they ARE of the age to relax and ENJOY their lives after working long and hard to have the means to retire to such a community.
What business is it of yours or anyone else’s HOW many houses John McCain has? The man has EARNED everything that he has.
He is the ONLY one who has SERVED our country and shed BLOOD for it – have YOU done that? Have you been held a prisoner of war for over 5 years and held fast to the love of your country?
In response to your link to the article about the Village residents having STD’s….again I ask, WHAT BUSINESS IS THAT OF YOURS? Who are YOU to tell them what their sex lives should be like? I thought you were in the party of “CHOICE”?
What the residents of the Villages, and the rest of us – many who drove HOURS to get there were there for was to support our candidate because of WHAT SHE STANDS FOR! And the numbers DO say it all – we ALL WILL be going to the polls on November 4!
I choose to live in a FREE country, not a socialist one, which is what YOUR party wants us to become. More government = less freedom. I do not want the government in every area of my life, deciding what’s “best” for me and my family.
My son is in our Army to defend the freedoms that were laid out for us 230 years ago, but I would guess you’ve never even given ONE SECOND of thought to serving your country. And from your tone, I would bet that even if we had a draft, you would find a place to run to and hide so you wouldn’t have to do your time.
AYE and MISSY – Thank you for your support!
AYE – I’m sure that time with your sons will forever be a very important part of their lives! I’d love to have a sit down with Sean Hannity and Carl Rove myself and tell them thank you for not backing down to the Liberal Bullies!
IT’S TIME FOR REFORM AND YES WE DO DESERVE BETTER AND JOHN MCCAIN IS THE ONE TO FILL THAT FOR US!

OlMoney— Keep on working that senior bashing routine. It’s sure to swing more and more votes to Mccain.

As for “How many end up showing up for a rally is not particularly newsworthy” I would only note that you folks were chortling quite a bit when Obama was drawing the big crowds.
