Uncle Sam has just become the 800 pound gorilla in the U.S. mortgage market. The Bush administration is seizing troubled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in a bid to help reverse a prolonged housing and credit crisis.

But private analysts worried that it may not be enough to stabilize the slumping housing market given the glut of vacant homes for sale, rising foreclosures, rising unemployment and weak consumer confidence.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Economy.com… predicted that 30-year mortgage rates, currently averaging 6.35 percent nationwide, could dip to close to 5.5 percent. That’s because investors will be more willing to buy the debt issued by Fannie and Freddie – and at lower rates – since the federal government is now explicitly standing behind that debt.

“Effectively, the federal government has now become the nation’s mortgage lender,” he said. “This takes a major financial threat off the table.”

Officials announced Sunday that both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were being placed in a government conservatorship, a move that could end up costing taxpayers billions of dollars.

I never said his faith had anything to do with it. He has lied about it. His step-father was also Muslim and in Indonesia you take the faith of your father. I would never put his faith as a reason not ot vote for anyone. Hell, I am Catholic and my faith is put down by almost every Protestant Church and only one Catholic has been President. It is that he has lied about it and the little extra on the rest does not change the fact a bit.

Play the whole tape – its very clear when you look at the whole segment, when Stephanopolis asks him, that Obama meant “my Muslim faith” in the sense of “my supposed Muslim faith,” i.e. “they’re lying about my being Muslim.” Even conservative websites have admitted that no one could look at this as some kind of revealing slip of the tongue on Obama’s part.
Look, the guy is Christian, OK? Attack his policies if you like, but stop with the innuendo.

Richard, you could be right, but the converse could also be true in this case. I can’t judge Obama’s heart (that’s between him and his Maker), but I do know that “Christian” seems to be used very loosely in his case. You can’t be both Christian and Muslim at the same time, and his church/spiritual relationships more point to the latter than the former.

As for Music Man (16): were you alive during the Clinton presidency? 8 years of relative peace and great prosperity? Were you alive during the Reagan presidency? When the national debt grew more in 8 years than it had in the whole previous history of the country? Are you aware of the statistics released this week which prove that, since World War II, the economy has grown significantly faster whenever Democrats have controlled the Presidency? Your use of ALL CAPS is probably a sign that your thought springs from some deep anger within you rather than from ideas and information, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprized.

Sarah Palin was right because we the taxpayers are bailing out Freddy Mac and Fannie Mae (or whoever the hell they are). You’re assuming that McCain/Palin had no prior knowledge that there was going to be a bail-out. I think she and McCain both knew there was going to be a taxpayer bailout and that is what Sarah meant by her comments.

Also, the Chosen One lied to George Stephanopoulas when he said he registered for the Selective Service when he got out of high school in 1979. There was no more Selective Service registration in 1979. It terminated in 1975 and wasn’t reinstated until July 1980. Just another lie to pile on the list of ones he has already built up.
