Actually Al Suweidi, the offshoot of Riyadh; which serves as the site of the climactic battle; is most likely very much like it was pictured. The events at the beginning of the film, refer to
actual attacks back in 2003-2004; Suweidi was where Lockheed engineer Paul Johnson was
beheaded. Saudi Arabia is very much like Arrakis in Dune, but the Fremen aren't the good
guys. It's the only film that really has come close to showing the real enemy. The FBI team
is the proxy for the American street; caught in a crossfire not unlike Black Hawk Down.

Gregory Ditman is correct at 6 above. Hollywood only cares about making a good return on it's investment. If it thought it could get good global receipts from a pro-military film, it would make a pro-military film. That still wouldn't make Holywood pro-military though, Holywood is pro-money and that's all it cares about.
Personally, i can't understand why anyone would want to make or watch a pro-war film. To me, war is always evil, sometimes necessary.

You forgot "Lions for Lambs"- one more U.S.-undermining self-loath-athon flick. (It also flopperoo'd.)

As well as its spiritual counterwight: "The Chronicles of Narnia". Admitedly a mythic retelling of WW II, but just as apt for reminding today's audiences that heroic figures can battle for liberty against an oppressive tyranny, even if Al Qaeda and jihadists are not specifically mentioned.

"Black Hawk Down" tried to work the same anti-war angle, earlier, but couldn't quite suppress the valor of the American fighting men under duress, and defeated its own defeatism.

Not every film made during the Cold War was a direct and literal examination of the Soviet/Communist threat, but took on the underlying and ultimate issues, and then made vital points about them by raising up iconic figures- from history or literature ("Spartacus", "Ben-Hur", and, apt for the current militant Mohammedan threat, "El Cid")- to tell easily understood parallel tales of the fight for freedom.

"The Sole Survivor" book will probably be made by Hollywood, primarily because it is set in Afghanistan (the morally more "tolerable" war front, from the Left's point of view) and because its message is bleak.

But I doubt the Tinseltown producers will emphasize the real and deadly point of that incident:

-political correctness in wartime (allowing captured civilian "shepherds' to go free, who then betray the position of the special forces guys, scouting in the mountains, to the Taliban ...who then ambushed them) can get you slaughtered.

The La-La Land contingent is so virulently opposed to "Dubyah" (and "Darth" Cheney, et al) that they would gladly see the whole country undermined (and even destroyed in the long run) if it will also harm George "Warcriminal" Bush. (Self-immolation appears to be desirable to them if they can also take out the source of their political hatred.)

Suicide Bombers in the cinematic realm, essentially.

Glad to die for their cause, if only economically and aesthetically.

They are going where the money is. Nazis were easy to pick on, because when the very early movies were made, they were made for the American audience. Soviets? Same thing, those movies were made for an American audience. Now big budget movies are made for an international audience because that's where the money is at. In the Valley of Elah made just over $6 million in the U.S. plus another $10 million in overseas tickets. Redacted got about $3 from Spain for every $1 it got from the U.S. Even Spiderman 2 made $37 million more overseas than it did in the U.S. There is already talk that it's so bad that GI Joe will be a U.N. or generic-government soldier and Captain America may be played by a pot smoking slacker named Matthew McConaughey. They also took Captain America to a safe route hunting Nazis.

Now TV is a different story, because few show make it intact overseas. Generally they are remade like Ugly Betty is a Latin American knock off that neither resembles the original or it's knockoff. Other countries do the same thing to U.S. shows. So TV shows are generally played toward a U.S audience.

Other than the distortions about conditions in Saudi Arabia it was a good film. And yes, I always like it when the bad guys get it.

You know Mike you're probably right on The Kingdom... but I really like the movie...
Not sure if it's because the bad guys get hit hard or the ending where both parties admit that "we'll kill them all" and I think that speaks to the war on terror very well..

I remember you commenting about it on your blog, before, Mike.

Scott, I think at this point, the American public is ready to see positive movies about Iraq. It doesn't mean they are supporters of the Iraq invasion; but I think the majority of the American public, even those opposed to President Bush and the GWOT and OIF, do want to see our soldiers portrayed in a heroic light. They want to be optimistic and be given something to cheer about.

My uneducated, non-poll-driven opinion.

I saw "The Kingdom" and it gave a false impression that Saudi Arabia was as dangerous as the Baghdad of a few years ago. Still, not a bad movie and a reminder that the Saudis are victims of terrorism at the hands of extremists just as we are. Even more so.

The answer rests in why Michael Moore's Opumentary (his description) made hundreds of millions, but all the films about heroism on 911, all the Flt 93 versions, Twin Towers and more...all combined didn't make as much as Moore made off the war.

Why do people see a fictional opumentary rather than real movies about real heroism?

Answer that=answer the entire opposition to the war on terror.
