UPDATED: When you’re black first, and American second….

It was earlier today that Doug…. ooops, sorry, Dave! make that DAVE Noble… Anyway, DAVE Noble and I were having a chat on another FA thread, about how I believe Michelle Obama thinks of herself first as a black woman, and as an American second. You can read our exchanges here.

Lo, behold… an article today on a surprise version of our National Anthem performed during the annual State of the City address in Denver, CO.

A jazz singer shocked some Denver residents after replacing the words to the national anthem with those of the “Black National Anthem” during the annual State of the City address this week.

Rene Marie was asked to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” before Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper delivered the annual address on Tuesday. Instead, she sang the lyrics of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” — a hymn commonly referred to as the “Black National Anthem” — to the tune of the national anthem, MyFOXColorado.com reported.

snip

The mayor said only Marie, her husband and a musical adviser knew what the local jazz singer had in mind.

Needless to say, her abrupt and secret change in the “set list” didn’t go down well. The Mayor was “disappointed”, and City Councilman, Charlie Brown (I swear, I’m not making this up….) was “mad” and “almost walked off the stage”.

But this is what happens when citizens think of themselves first as black Americans, and just plain ol’ Americans second. Would Ms Marie have considered this same stunt – substituting an albeit beautiful song celebrating civil rights, for the nation’s anthem – had BHO not been the DNC candidate for POTUS? Personally, I think it’s highly unlikely.

Instead, I truly believe that this unspoken, but genuinely noticable aspect of the Obama’s – quietly emphasizing their own projection as Black-Americans first – is encouraging this “hypenated Americanism” and class/race division to a new extreme. From a party that insists it is doing all it can to “unite” Americans, the DNC seems to have accomplished just the opposite. They’ve emboldened women who think gender over substance, and Americans who place race as a priority over national tradition.

As I said in my post to Dave Noble:

The whole point of patriotism is the bond between all as a nation…. regardless of color or nationality. To place import of your class/race first – over and above the national bond of all – is, to me, highly inappropriate for the leader of the free world. I will not condone any hypenated nonsense from my POTUS. He must be American first in his representation, or does not get my respect.

… and a H/T to Mike’sA for this news blurb…

UPDATE: Obama: “‘We only have one National Anthem’

The background simmering of the story, combined with the ever astute BHO cyber hit squad vigilence, results in initial, cautious “disappointed” and “mad” criticism stepping up a few notches… including the DNC candidate weighing in himself.

“Well, ‘Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing’ is a beautiful song that has been sung in African-American churches and other events for a very long time,” Obama told the Rocky in phone interview. “We only have one National Anthem. And so, if she was asked to sing the National Anthem, she should have sung that. ‘Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing’ is a beautiful song, but we only have one National Anthem.”

The Denver Mayor, John Hickenlooper, tread lightly on what could be construed as a racially charged issue, expressing only disappointment. Perhaps with BHO on his side, he felt more comfortable lashing out with stronger words.

“Her actions show a certain lack of understanding for how strongly our community feels about patriotic symbols and traditions, and certainly overshadowed a day of great importance to our city,” Hickenlooper said.

Now the Governor and sundry CO Congressional representatives weigh in as well, none in support of Ms. Marie. (RTFA…)

As for Ms. Marie? She chalks it up to “artistic expression”, saying her song: “was an artistic expression of her love for her country.”

But Ms. Marie herself, in other prior interviews reiterated in this Rocky Mountain news story, goes on to affirm my headline here, “When you’re black first, and American second”.

Marie said she started working on the song about three years ago after she toured Russia and an interviewer referred to her as an American. She said she was “startled” by that reference and felt like she wasn’t an American.

“I struggled with why I felt that way when I came back to United States because I love living in this country,” she said, adding that she decided to rewrite some of the patriotic songs she learned as a child, both as a creative outlet and to reflect her black heritage.

While I have no doubt that BHO finds this judgment by Ms. Marie a glaring error, it does not change my opinion that the Obama’s themselves bear an indirect responsibility. Obviously prior to the DNC candidate’s meteoric rise to prominence, Ms. Marie’s attitude of “black first, American second” was well entrenched. And she is not alone in this hypenated Americanism. So what is different?

The Obama’s remind us publicly… and often… of their pleasure in a new rise of pride in Black America. Also we are reminded by his popularity that this black pride is readily accepted by the nation. But did they expect this pride would usurp a “blind to race/class” national pride?

Reality dictates that for the DNC candidate to be viewed as the great “uniter”, he must first emphasize America’s divides. And over the past months, the slow and painfull healing since the 50s and 60s has gone retrograde. Instead of neutralizing oppression based on race, we find the gap again widening. A significant portion of America – of many nationalities and race – prefer to one up the past, harboring an odd vengence that manifests itself in public shunning of traditional national expression.

This segment of humanity is emboldened by BHO’s popular acceptance… thus giving Ms. Marie the confidence to do something she would never had dreamed of doing had Obama never made it past Iowa.

To BHO’s defense, I don’t believe he consciously divides the nation out of political expediency. Instead I believe it’s as simple as this – the Obama’s view the nation literally in “black and white”. As evidenced by their choice of theology, and revealed by his website with constituents neatly divided in his “people” page, and his “groups and circles” page – the Obama’s inherently view Americans not as a single unit, but as subsets of classes and races.

For a leader of the free world, this is a dangerous starting place for governance.

Isn’t it ‘dave’ noble??

Dave, Doug… They’re interchangeable. Though Doug isn’t nearly as offensive.

I wonder if the Dems will be saying the black pledge of allegiance at their convention?

Just For The Record

This is awful and crazy.

I just don’t understand why people don’t want to come together as one country.

She is a disgrace to black people.

Many Blacks seem to be concerned about how people perceive them. She doesn’t help!

Mike,

When you can’t say anything smart, bring the snark.

See, Democrats are all about CHANGE now; about a new sense of unity. That’s why she took the public event, made it her own, and made it political rather than patriotic. Republicans like this lady have to realize that the era of pushing one’s own agenda rather than what’s good for the nation is now over. Barack’s ended that.

Right?

It seems that every that everything that happens Barack has something to do with it.

I bet he called this woman over the phone and gave her this idea, since he has always supported these types of crazy people.

You’re right. How silly. This happened on Bush’s watch. It’s his fault!

See, Democrats are all about CHANGE now; about a new sense of unity.

What would have happened if, in “a new sense of unity” an individual had got up and sang The Battle Cry of Freedom? The problem is that this woman sacrificed the sense of unity for her own selfish ideology and agenda, and in doing so proudly admitted that she decieved those who invited her to sing the National Anthem. How can one get any more hypocritical?

You’re right Rovin, but don’t you DARE tell her or those who prefer to sing their individual anthems rather than the national anthem of the UNITED States of America.

Me, I’m just gonna write it off to either moonbats in public, OR to a hair stylist who vibrated loose some brain cells when she had her head shaved. T/F, Bugs Bunny cartoons set on Mars had aliens w hair JUST like that?! No, wait…I’m sorry, I was thinking of Dr Suess. My bad

Hmmmm.

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/08/22/gw.poll/

Whattya know? Seems Michelle Obama is perfectly in tune with mainstream America.

Oh well.

I’ll vote for her husband anyway.

You are using a poll???? Polls have nothing to do with reality and I could careless what a CNN poll says. I have never ever been polled and no one I have ever talked to has ever been polled. So I am to assume that the poll is what I think. Come on. Polls are just a excuse for the MSM to bash whoever they want to bash this week.

This is tpyical of the Multicuturalism that has infected our country. You are not an America, you are Polish-America, African-American, Itialian-AMerican. Hell, if you put my hyphenated-American it would take a whole paragraph. When did people stop being just Americans, no matter what race creed or gender.

MataHarley opined:

Arthur is equating Christian first with black first.

I’m suggesting most people are *something* first and American second. No surprise there.

The interesting thing is ‘Christian’ is a choice. ‘Black’ is not.

And thanks for the rant STIX

Here’s my favorite part:

When did people stop being just Americans, no matter what race creed or gender.

I hate to break it to you but the question would more accurately posed as ‘Why have so many people not been considered ‘Americans’, no matter what race, creed or gender?’

When blacks start howling about how us whites and other, non-blacks are racists, does it not occur to them that it’s not their color which bothers us, it’s their attitude?

Sorry MataH: Artie is another of my moonbats and an ally of Ken Hoop’s when the mood strikes him. I guess he was feeling neglected at Mike’s America.

You’ll notice he never actually makes an argument, or presents anything substantial or original in countering what you have presented. He’s more interested in playing semantic games.

Obama would call efforts like Arties a “distraction” except that Obama seems to prefer distractions rather than face the consequences of his own black liberation theology roots.

I am an American then Christian second. Then Polish, Lithuanian, Dutch, Norwegian, Mongolian, some African, Some Jamaican, should I keep going.
English, Irish, Scotch Irish, Almost Forgot German

I am a mutt, what should my hyphenated American be?????

As I said before I am an American first and foremost, just like my Grandfather and his Grandfather before him.

I’m suggesting most people are *something* first and American second.

That’s just the crowd you have chosen to hang out with.

The rest of us are Americans first and foremost.

This is a consequence of the idiocy of multiculturalism that threatens to balkanize American society and divide us.

Had we been teaching civics and patriotism in school instead of multiculturalism and love for the U.N. this wouldn’t be happening.

The reason Ms. Marie felt emboldened to sing the black liberation anthem at that gathering was that the blacks think when (hopefully never) Barack is president they will come into their own. They think he will change everything and their values will be the norm and all things white will be abolished. They think this because they don’t have a clue about how this country is governed. They also think this because this is what they want and expect to happen.

And who is to say that they would be wrong.

The interesting thing is ‘Christian’ is a choice. ‘Black’ is not

Interesting that you would say this. Tell me, why don’t you hear Chinese Americans and other Asian Americans pushing their race and whining about being put down all the time and left out of the pie. Their color and facial features are different from caucasian as much as blacks are. They don’t do this because they are success oriented. The problem with blacks is that they are taught in their churches by their preachers, who are their leaders, that they can’t succeed in life because whites won’t let them. They totally ignore all the blacks who have succeeded. In fact, these same preachers denigate these successful people and call them Uncle Toms. Anyone in their communities who try to get ahead are accused of acting white. Their leaders are the ones keeping them down because they want them dependent on them both monetarily and mentally. And the blacks fall for this. That is why they think of themselves as black first and American second. And some of them don’t consider themselves Americans at all. In black liberation theology they consider themelves Africans only.

Nice to see you back, and in full form, BarbaraS! Happy 4th, girl.

You too Mata Harley. I have really enjoyed reading your posts even though some of them make me feel totally dumb and that I should brush up on my education a little bit more. Maybe a whole lot more.

It really irritates me that in this great country of ours where anyone can succeed in life and live the good life fail to even try.

Thank you for the kind compliments, Barbara. But you sell yourself short. Our intelligence lies in the capacity to absorb and process data. Not in the ability to spit it back out orally, or via keyboard. Some people manage to convey what they mean – or thought processes – easier than others. That does not make them “smarter”.

Stix,

That reminds me of that Christmas joke well-wishing to all my liberal friends apologetically, so as not to offend, in paragraphs what is summed up in one simple phrase to our conservative friends: Merry Christmas!
