The full quote is:

“No one in this world has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby. “

Basically translated as “People can easily be persuaded to accept the most inferior ideas or useless products”.

I always had two problems with this quote.

1: It comes from the notion that the ordinary citizen is incapable of making sound decisions for their own lives… a typical liberal/progressive notion that drives their govt control from cradle to grave policies.

2: We can most certainly “lose money” by underestimating the intelligence by oppressive socialist welfare policies

It was not as applicable during Mencke’s time as now because we had not descended so far into the rising acceptance of the socialist trend.
