Tonight with be the “Solstice Moon”

Sometimes you just can’t believe your eyes. This week is one of those times.

On Wednesday night, June 18th, step outside at sunset and look around. You’ll see a giant form rising in the east. At first glance it looks like the full Moon. It has craters and seas and the face of a man, but this “moon” is strangely inflated. It’s huge!

You’ve just experienced the Moon Illusion.

There’s no better time to see it. The full Moon of June 18th is a “solstice moon”, coming only two days before the beginning of northern summer. This is significant because the sun and full Moon are like kids on a see-saw; when one is high, the other is low. This week’s high solstice sun gives us a low, horizon-hugging Moon and a strong Moon Illusion.

Sky watchers have known for thousands of years that low-hanging moons look unnaturally big. At first, astronomers thought the atmosphere must be magnifying the Moon near the horizon, but cameras showed that is not the case. Moons on film are the same size regardless of elevation: example. Apparently, only human beings see giant moons.

I intend to gather my children and go up on the roof later this evening.

My 10 year old is fascinated with the planets and the stars.

Some can sure get carried away with that old Prescott Bush legend.

If Bush were 1/10th what the left projects onto him, Oberman would have been in a gulag years ago.

All three links are demonstrative of the oxymoron that is today’s faux liberal ideology; ie progressives.

The Russian monstrosity called their government is in some ways similar to Iran’s government.

When Iran’s leaders say they did not know about or approve the Revolutionary Guards or others’ actions, those particular leaders may be telling the truth. They and their faction may not have known or approved of anything. However, another faction with its own goals and command structure did. Or maybe two factions… or three…. But not the one making the press statement.

One of the reasons Iran’s “president” cry’s the “crusaders are coming” is to try and rally Iran to his faction/coalition. This is why Iran is talking about invasions while the US is not. Continued Iranian attacks in the regions may force our hand, but attacking Iran is not high on the lists of things we need to do. Defeating Iran in Iraq however and further fractionaizing Iran’s government with through this defeat, is.

I think the leaders of the “anti-war” movement also see this and know that not invading Iran and letting it fall from within would be a US victory. This may be why they are leading the “Bush wants to invade Iran” charge within the US.

They are not “anti-war” at all. They are very pro-war, just not for our side.

That is the elephant in the center of the room Russia must deal with. They opened a Pandora’s Box years ago and the Islamists not only hate “godless communists” but have a history of war with the lands of and around modern Russia.

No one said what the Soviets did made sense and would not come back to bite them.

I’m reading former Sec. State George Shultz’s memoir “Turmoil and Triumph” and he describes the scene in Lebanon in the early 1980’s when the Marine Baracks suicide bombing took place. He said that everytime the “pull out now” crowd in the U.S. started crowing, the Iranians and Syrians, using Hezbollah would push all the harder.

It was only when we pushed back, using the USS New Jersey and other assets that the Hezboos backed down.

There is no U.S. military in Lebanon to make the Hezboos back down today. And if Israel got involved, the world would not condemn Hezbollah, but Israel.
