Obama Wins NC – Update: Hillary Winning Big With Blue Collar Workers – Update: Obama Divisive Victory Speech – Accuses Right Of Being Divisive – Update: Obama Wants To Talk To al-Qaeda

Obama won NC as expected with a pretty much 100% backing from blacks while Hillary is winning big with white blue collar workers:

Nearly unanimous support among African-Americans lifted Barack Obama to easy victory in North Carolina, while the Democratic presidential primary in Indiana played out against a more complex matrix of voter groups.

Blacks accounted for a third of North Carolina voters and 91 percent of them supported Obama in preliminary exit poll results. Against that voting bloc Hillary Clinton would have needed 70 percent of non-black voters; she fell well short, with 58 percent.

Turnout by African-Americans was in line with past years – 31 percent in 1992, the last North Carolina primary in which an exit poll was conducted. Obama has won all eight of the primaries this year in which blacks accounted for at least three in 10 Democratic voters.

Another result, mirroring one in Pennsylvania two weeks ago, indicated a potentially negative impact of racially motivated voting. Fourteen percent of white voters in North Carolina called race an important factor in their vote; these Democratic primary voters were much less apt than others to say they’d support Obama against John McCain in November. It’s a small group, but small groups can matter in close contests.

Among those voters, just 48 percent said they’d support Obama against McCain; the rest said they’d take McCain or sit it out. By contrast, among the large majority of whites who said race was not an important factor, 61 percent said they’d support Obama in the general election. It’s an open question whether those white voters – overwhelmingly Clinton supporters now – would in fact come around to Obama were he the nominee.

About those blue collar workers:

Sen. Hillary Clinton, who made a strong pitch to blue-collar workers, was pulling a majority of the votes in rural and suburban Indiana during Tuesday’s Democratic primary.

In early exit polling, Clinton of New York was taking 53 percent of the vote in suburban areas, compared to 47 percent for Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, and 68 percent of the rural vote compared to Obama’s 32 percent.

And with 14% of the vote in from Indiana Hillary has extended her lead by 39,000 votes. But she may well have lost by double digits in NC which is bad. If she had kept it in single digits and did well in Indiana it would be hard to say that she is done.

Still plenty of votes to count so we shall see.

UPDATE

Obama gave his victory speech in NC and began it with his usual divisive talk about the rich and the poor…..and then accuses the right of being divisive THEN to top it all off he stated that Roosevelt talked to Hitler and Tojo.

Poor guy is going to get trounced in the general.

The woman I met in Indiana who just lost her job, and her pension, and her insurance when the plant where she worked at her entire life closed down – she can’t afford four more years of tax breaks for corporations like the one that shipped her job overseas. She needs us to give tax breaks to companies that create good jobs here in America. She can’t afford four more years of tax breaks for CEOs like the one who walked away from her company with a multi-million dollar bonus. She needs middle-class tax relief that will help her pay the skyrocketing price of groceries, and gas, and college tuition. That’s why I’m running for President.

The college student I met in Iowa who works the night shift after a full day of class and still can’t pay the medical bills for a sister who’s ill – she can’t afford four more years of a health care plan that only takes care of the healthy and the wealthy; that allows insurance companies to discriminate and deny coverage to those Americans who need it most. She needs us to stand up to those insurance companies and pass a plan that lowers every family’s premiums and gives every uninsured American the same kind of coverage that Members of Congress give themselves. That’s why I’m running for President.

The mother in Wisconsin who gave me a bracelet inscribed with the name of the son she lost in Iraq; the families who pray for their loved ones to come home; the heroes on their third and fourth and fifth tour of duty – they can’t afford four more years of a war that should’ve never been authorized and never been waged. They can’t afford four more years of our veterans returning to broken-down barracks and substandard care. They need us to end a war that isn’t making us safer. They need us to treat them with the care and respect they deserve. That’s why I’m running for President.

The man I met in Pennsylvania who lost his job but can’t even afford the gas to drive around and look for a new one – he can’t afford four more years of an energy policy written by the oil companies and for the oil companies; a policy that’s not only keeping gas at record prices, but funding both sides of the war on terror and destroying our planet in the process. He doesn’t need four more years of Washington policies that sound good, but don’t solve the problem. He needs us to take a permanent holiday from our oil addiction by making the automakers raise their fuel standards, corporations pay for their pollution, and oil companies invest their record profits in a clean energy future. That’s the change we need. And that’s why I’m running for President.

Yes, we know what’s coming. We’ve seen it already. The same names and labels they always pin on everyone who doesn’t agree with all their ideas. The same efforts to distract us from the issues that affect our lives by pouncing on every gaffe and association and fake controversy in the hope that the media will play along. The attempts to play on our fears and exploit our differences to turn us against each other for pure political gain – to slice and dice this country into Red States and Blue States; blue-collar and white-collar; white and black, and brown.

This is what they will do.

~~~
The other side can label and name-call all they want, but I trust the American people to recognize that it’s not surrender to end the war in Iraq so that we can rebuild our military and go after al Qaeda’s leaders. I trust the American people to understand that it’s not weakness, but wisdom to talk not just to our friends, but our enemies – like Roosevelt did, and Kennedy did, and Truman did.
How else to interpret this then he wants to talk to al-Qaeda?
UPDATE
Ed Morrissey on this whole talking to the enemy baloney:
I’m particularly bemused by the references to FDR and Truman. Both men ended up having to conduct massive wars that outlasted their presidencies, and in FDR’s case in no small measure because Western nations insisted on talk rather than action. While we maintained diplomatic contact with Germany and Japan until Pearl Harbor, FDR did not meet with Hitler and Tojo. And that diplomatic contact didn’t stop war from coming; indeed, it make it much worse than it otherwise would have been, at least in Europe, had the US, UK, and France had taken the appropriate steps to disarm Hitler when he started his Versailles Treaty violations.
Truman met with Joseph Stalin during and after World War II, but that didn’t stop the Soviets from blockading West Berlin or ringing down an iron curtain across eastern Europe, enslaving those nations for almost 50 years. If Potsdam and Yalta are Obama’s idea of successful foreign policy, then he obviously hasn’t studied 20th century history. Talking with implacable tyrants leads to appeasement, which leads to either war or more implacability of the tyranny in question.
Yes, Truman indeed “talked” with the enemy, Obie. In fact he sent the Japanese a special message of conciliation…
http://www.atomicarchive.com/Photos/Hiroshima/images/Cloud.jpg
…which he hoped would be taken as it was meant, an offer to allow them to surrender.
When they didn’t, he was thoughtful enough to resubmit…
http://www.atomicarchive.com/Photos/Nagasaki/images/NG30.jpg
They accepted.
Hundreds of thousands of lives, both American and Japanese, were saved by ending the war without having to attempt an invasion. And then Japan was restructured to prevent a repeat.
If O’Bummer had been prez then, we would be speaking either German or Japanese by now, but probably not Blacks, because the Germans considered them to be inferior, so they would either have returned them to slavery or just sent them up in smoke.
And what the #$%^ does he mean “rebuild” America’s military? He’s even a bigger liar than Gore!
In one breath he’s going to talk with our enemies, and in the next he’s “going after Al Qaeda’s leadership.” And the people who vote for him can’t see what a con artist he is? Unbelievable!
Oh they talked alright. Truman used nukes, Kennedy treatened to blow up the world and Roosevelt felt it justified to let 10s of thousands of Americans die to prevent Germany, Italy and Japan from talking over the world.
Obama’s plan wouldn’t help uninsured adults unless he changed it. That’s the difference between Hillary’s plan and Obama’s.
Hillary’s 47 million uninsured is based on a general discription based on Kaiser Permanente insurance. They found that 10 million non Americans were uninsured, 17 million making $50,000 or more were uninsured and out of the 20 million left, 9 million found insurance within 4 months, 2.7 million took 4 months to 2 years to get health insurance and it was 8.3 million that didn’t have insurance for 2 years or more. Kaiser Permanente alone has 8.7 million customers/members and spend $34.4 billion a year in operating expenses. At $4,000 each it would require $80 billion a year to keep 20 million Americans making under $50,000 a year insured in private insurance companies. A special deal could be put in place (especialy with one with an $80 billion account) to cover cronic problems that normally would be dropped. So where would the government get the money? $17 billion from ended farm subsidies would drop it down to $63 billion. If there were 137 million taxpayers (number of 2007 returns) , it would be $460 per year to be put in unemployment insurance. If one was to increase unemployment insurance to cover the 11.7 million Americans that temporary don’t have uninsurance, it would be about $342 a year (this does not involve using part of the former farm subsidies money). I don’t have a problem with paying $342 more per year, because I might be one of those that might need it. Obviously some of those 137 million taxpayers would be using that insurance each year too. To get back to the 8.3 million chronically uninsured, that would require $33.2 billion. The former farm subsidies money would cut it down to $16.2 billion. Since the U.S. has two less enemies and 2 new allies, the U.S. military could probably part with $8.8 billion in it’s general fund of $548.8 billion (this is not money that is going to the security of Iraq and Afganistan, nor is it money going into veteran’s affairs). Now it’s down to $7.4 billion or $54.02 per taxpayer. So in total it could cost $396.02 more per taxpayer per year to give every American under $50,000 a year health insurance. It could decrease even further as that money has to go somewhere which would create more workers, more pork could be found and transfered over and a host of more cuts in federal spending could be made (for instance from the winding down of the conflict in Iraq and payments for the damage from Katrina. In 2007 $33 billion was spent on Katrina for example.
Well, like it or not, the writing is slowly starting to materialize on the wall. While I for one very much hope that Hillary fights on till the bitter end on the convention floor, it looks like we may be facing BHO in November. Looks like you were right MataHarley, North Carolina wasn’t near as close a thing as some of the polls had been speculating.
However, I think that part of that writing on the wall is either written in invisible ink, or the DNC doesn’t like what it says. Unless BHO can convince Middle America that he’s a “regular joe” that likes beer and football (and Americans do have frightfully short memories), he’s going to get creamed in November. There were an awful lot of people who were “fooled” into voting for BHO in the early primaries, and working class whites seem to revile him; they’re going to be arrayed against him, or at least stay home in November. Sure, he gets 91% of the black vote, but that’s only 12% of the total population, and they’ve been voting Democratic for the last 100 years! But, under Howard Dean and the rest of the radical left, I suspect that the DNC is entirely too far lost in its liberal delusions to notice.
Machiavelli, I hope and suspect you to be right that under Howard Dean and the rest of the radical left, I suspect that the DNC is entirely too far lost in its liberal delusions to notice that this country is predominately right of center.
After the primaries yesterday I am guessing Clinton will soon drop out. Saying BHO will get trounced in the general is right wing blindness.
BHO grew up on food stamps… calling him an elitist isn’t going to work… although some have been trying. He won’t forget what growing up poor was like.
I agree Sky. BHO will not be trounced (unless Rev Wright tries to take the spotlight along with a few other cartloads of baggage). However, it’s equally foolish for any faux Democrat to claim that BHO will walk away with the general election.
“He won’t forget what growing up poor was like.”
That statement is so absolutely absurd that it is beyond laughable.
Obama was never poor a day in his life.
Unbelievable!
Who are you kidding besides yourself?
I see the Cuckoo said: “BHO grew up on food stamps.”
Really?
Want to stake your already shredded crediblity on that lie?
Or does the exclusive Hawaiian prep school Obama attended accept food stamps in lieu of the $15,000 annual tuition?
Grew up on food stamps?????? In what country????
I agree Mike, no credibilty. Not like this Sky ever had any.
I’ve been stating that the two illnesses of the Republican party, the Iraq war and the economy, have become front-center issues and are presently becoming identified as similar in the public mind-set. Public opinion polls have bearing this out now for months, while here at FA there has been a decided silent on the matter, with contrarian bold statements like, “[Obama] is going to get trounced in the general.”
But what happened yesterday in North Carolina is another indicator that the Republican party’s ills are remaining solid in the public’s mindset. Some of us have been keeping an eye on Rep. Walter Jones Jr., a Rep. from NC, as he was facing a primary challenge.
You may remember him turning the phase “freedom fries” on french-fries when he was a more hawkish man in 2003.
Well that was then. Now Jones is an active opponent of the president’s policy in Iraq as any Democrat on the Hill and advocates withdrawal!
Jones won by 20 points last nite in the swing state of NC:
Don’t tell this to Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD 01), who lost his primary bid in Feb., but apparently, GOPers don’t mind if their Rep. is against the Iraq war. Rep. Walter Jones (R), who faced stiff opposition in his conservative CD over his outspoken stance against the war, nonetheless comfortably defeated Onslow Co. Commis. Joe McLaughlin (R) 60-40%.
McLaughlin had the perfect issue in which to attack Jones in the primary, but he never raised enough money to raise his name ID enough to come close to knocking off Jones, whose father was a Democratic Congressman in the state. In the end, Jones’ long ties to the CD, his conservative position on social issues and McLaughlin’s lack of cash, made this a laugher for Jones.
Count this as among all the another reasons why McCain won’t give us the details of his strategy on his web site and why FA’s claims for Republican victory are very bold statements.
Doug said: “I’ve been stating that the two illnesses of the Republican party the Iraq war and the economy…”
You are correct that the GOP has it’s problems. How could anyone deny that?
But where is the Dem alternative?
They took control of the House and Senate saying they would fix both the problems you mention above. And what have they done?
Has Dem control of the House and Senate forced President Bush to withdraw from Iraq?
Have Dems done ANYTHING that would effectively address high gasoline prices?
No and NO!
Here’s a tip Doug: Before you trash one parties approach, make sure you have an alternative that WORKS!
Very well said Doug!!!
“Very well said Doug!!!”
Spoken like a true parrot.
Sky, pardon me for asking, but do you have any intentions of addressing your misstatement about the Obamessiah knowing “what growing up poor was like”?
Or, realizing your folly, and considering how quickly you were caught, have you decided to flee from the subject once again?
You may not be accustomed to being challenged mentally on your statements on the other sites you visit but you won’t enjoy that sort of free pass here.
Of course some of the sites you visit aren’t exactly stimulating your mental parts now are they?
We’ll make it easy for him Aye Chihuahua, from my favorite democrat blog:
http://www.stop-obama.org/?p=204
Missy,
Let’s not make it too easy for him.
He needs to sharpen those critical thinking and research skills.
Nope, not fleeing from the subject… His mother at one point in her life was on food stamps… that certainly was not well off…
see the story:
http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1729524,00.html
Would you like a response Aye??? This story tells how his mom was on food stamps and when.
here you go:
http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1729524,00.html
That’s a great article 551110. It certainly chronicles what total flakes and losers Obama’s parent’s were. Shocking that the twice married mother abandoned her son to the hands of the rich white grandmother (She was V.P. of the Bank of Hawaii).
I wonder if Obama reflected on grannies position when Rev. Wright made his multiple rants about “rich white people” who can get kids like Obama into $15,000 a year prep schools.
The bottom line is that 55110 claimed “BHO grew up on food stamps.” That claim is FALSE!
While his mother was on food stamps, the period must have been rather short, as I don’t believe you can collect them if you are living with a man other than the boy’s father in Indonesia.
Furthermore, Obama is an elitist NOW! Whether he benefitted from a government program as an infant is immaterial.
He is NOT a man of the people.
Only parrots and cuckoos would think otherwise.
OK, since you decided to return to the scene of your crime let’s analyze this thing a little deeper shall we?
B. Hussein Obama was born in August of 1961. When he was almost TWO his mother returned to college, money was tight, and she began to collect food stamps. She also relied on her parents to help take care of BO, Jr. Granny worked at a bank, she was hardly destitute.
You’ll notice, also, in the very next paragraph the story talks about how “mother and son spent months preparing to follow him [Lolo Soetoro, the step-father] to Indonesia—getting shots, passports and plane tickets”.
Got that? She was a college student who was paying tuition and relying on her parents. BO, Jr. (who was conceived out of wedlock) was not quite TWO years old.
His mommy collected food stamps when he was TWO.
She could scrape up the money for shots, passports, plane tickets, and tuition but yet she collected food stamps while she relied on her parents to take care of her illegitimately conceived love child.
Imagine that. Taxpayer money supporting someone who was so poor and destitute that she could hardly afford her tuition, shots, passports, and plane tickets.
That’s not “growing up poor”.
That’s welfare fraud.
Also, how many experiences do you think BO, Jr. would remember from when he was TWO years old?
Aye,
In 1961 the Food Stamp program was a pilot program President Kennedy signed an executive order for that was offered to eight counties in the US. It eventually expanded to 43 counties/cities by 1964. I’ve tried to find what counties participated in the program, what I’ve seen is that it originated in the Appalachian community that Kennedy visited during his campaign. No mention of any Hawaiian counties participating.
Missy,
Thanks for that info.
I notice that Sky hasn’t been back around to this thread.
Not surprising really.
He likes to dash in, deposit his buncombe, and dash out before the inevitable challenges begin.
His foolishness about BO, Jr. growing up poor is just incredible.
Jr’s mammy was so poor she could barely afford her tuition on top of the shots, passports, and airline tickets she needed to go to Indonesia. All the while she collected food stamps.
