By the way, those who wish to support the troops in a more direct fashion should consider donating to Army Emergency Relief (at http://www.aerhq.org ). This is a 501(c)(3) organziation, unique in that it is integrated with the military chain of command; AER provides funds to commanders, so that they can give direct assistance to soldiers and their families with a minimum of bureaucracy or hassle; a company CO or 1SG can approve an AER loan of up to $1000. (Yes, they also help NGR soldiers/families mobilized for longer than 30 days, and they help the medically retired folks as well.) In 2006, AER provided $58 million in assistance to 57,000 soldiers/families.

AER also takes care of widows and children of those who give their lives, including need-based scholarship grants for higher education. They also do interest-free loans, on the basis of need, to help soldiers/families over a temporary hurdle.

It is primarily funded by payroll deductions from active duty and retired soldiers (which is how I first learned of it, during my service), but it does accept outside donations as well. Their overhead is only about 12%, which means that 88 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to our soldiers and their families as needed.

I have no connection to AER, other than that of a past contributor, but I have known several soldiers/families who received AER help over the years. It's a good outfit.

I thought about it, but that's way over in the wrong part of the state, especially after a week trip to NYC.

Looked like a great time!! Thanks for the picture!

Isn't it noteworthy that conservative rallies are the ones that end in peace and harmony with no one getting arrested?!! A good example for others to follow, I should say!

Way to go SKYE!

You get thrown off that horse (or was that peacenik an ass?) and you get right back out there and do an even BETTER job of rallying the PRO VICTORY movement.

Your dedication, ability and drive are the reasons I named you my <a href="http://mikesamerica.blogspot.com/2007/12/blogger-of-year-skye-at-midnight-blue.html" rel="nofollow">"Blogger of the Year."</a>

Keep up the good work. You make us all proud.
