Um….Kentucky’s Secretary of State IS a Republican. I will say, however, that he is genuinely well-liked across the board; even the most partisan folks on the left say things like “I hate to run against this guy” and name him a “rising Republican star.” He does stand out from other GOPers in Kentucky, simply because almost all of his positions are staked to what’s best for Kentucky, not necessarily what is best for his party. In Kentucky, that stands out regardless of one’s affiliation.

(I’m a centrist, registered Independent…sick to death of both corrupt parties.)

Just read in my local paper (after posting #7 above) that my state’s Attorney General has bad news for the 9000 people who tried to switch their party registration after January 1st – they won’t be voting in this primary:

FRANKFORT — Thousands of Kentuckians who have switched political affiliations over the past three months, in hopes of voting in May’s Democratic presidential primary, will instead be barred from casting ballots.

Secretary of State Trey Grayson alerted Kentuckians on Wednesday to a little-known state law that forbids people who change their party registration after Dec. 31 to vote in the May 20 primary.

“We’re getting a lot of reports of folks who are either independents or Republicans who are trying to become Democrats in order to vote in the primary,” Grayson said. “In the presidential primary, they will not be eligible to vote.”

Heh…who would have thought that Kentucky would be ahead of the curve on a clean-elections issue?

Hey, blame the states for having open primaries. Personally, I think it rather goofy that you can change your registration the day you walk up to the ballot box, but you can do so in any number of states. (I’m a registered Independent, and my state does not have open primaries.)

Having said that, I can’t approve of people jumping party ranks just to skew the opposition’s primary. (I said the same of those Democrats who reportedly jumped over to cast McCain ballots in some states.) While it may be legal in those states, it isn’t “right” in my book; it’s nothing more than gaming the system.

Heavens! Someone had the temerity to accuse Saint Rush of being "stupid". On this site I noted how Conservative just loved the ‘Hand me my broom, Oaf!" thread and thought it was the cutest thing ever. But do Conservatives ever smear anyone? Of couse not! For them, as always, it is DIFFERENT.
