Recruiting Station Bombed

I’m not sure what to make of this.

An explosive device damaged a military recruiting station in Times Square early Thursday, and police blocked off the area to investigate.

The explosive device caused minor damage, and no one was injured, police said. The explosion shattered a glass entryway. …

Witnesses staying at a hotel in the area said they heard a “big bang” and could feel the building shake. A large plume of smoke was also visible after the explosion, they said.

The police may have a few leads:

The police have attributed the blast to an improvised explosive device, and police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said the device had been placed in an ammunition box like the kind that can be bought at a military supply store. Mr. Kelly spoke with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg at a news conference at 9:30 a.m. in Times Square. The authorities are looking into a possible connection to two earlier bombings at foreign consulates in Manhattan, in 2005 and 2007. Official said that in today’s attack, a man in a gray hooded sweatshirt was seen leaving the scene on a bicycle. Subways and traffic are running normally through Times Square.

I don’t believe this to be an act of a Islamic fanatic since it went off at 0345hrs, when nobody was around to get hurt and as Bob Owens shows, the bomb wasn’t that big:

The time of the blast was around 3:43 AM, when pedestrian traffic in the area is typically light and the recruiting station was closed. From the time of the blast and lack of shrapnel, we can make the guarded assumption that causing casualties was not the bomber’s intention.

We can also infer that the bomber had no intention of destroying the targeted building as well, as the blast was small, and the ammunition can that carried the device could have easily held far more explosives.

From the choice of target, lack of shrapnel, and low amount of explosives used, I think it only logical to conclude that the blast was political in nature, a violent though purposefully less-lethal bomb, if you can ever call an improvised explosive device “less lethal.” For these reasons, I doubt it was the act of Islamic extremists.

Now, if its political then we have to assume its the anti-war nuts that have been attacking recruiter stations all across the country:

Attacks against military recruiters and their offices are growing around the United States, spurred by anti-American anarchists who thrash the centers, assault and batter people, and intimidate those who want to serve their country.

Attackers throw rocks, chain themselves to doors, punch and kick, spray paint graffiti, break windows, yell, and generally vandalize recruiting centers across the nation in repeated attacks.

Code Pink, an anti-war group that gave more than $600,000 to terrorists’ families in Iraq, is calling for anti-military agitators to escalate attacks on U.S. Government offices where the military work with potential recruits on their futures. The group outlines ways for followers to terrorize recruiters, shut down recruiting stations and stop people from exercising the Constitutional rights to pursue their life’s goals.

Anti-war and anarchists groups have already attacked military recruiting centers in Washington, D.C., Berkeley, Calif.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Milwaukee, Wis.; Santa Monica, Calif.; Toledo, Ohio; Murfreesboro, Tenn.; Pittsburgh, Penn.; Haverhill, Mass., and New York, N.Y. This is a partial list.

So, based on the size of the explosive, the fact that it was placed at a time of the day in which no one was hurt, and the fact that it was placed at a spot which the anti-war nuts have been attacking for months now you have to assume its some unsophisticated youth who has brought off on their nuttery and built one of those IED lite’s shown on YouTube to make a statement.

As Ed Morrissey notes, this leads to a much more violent end:

Of course, the people responsible will claim that they bombed the office during the night to keep anyone from being hurt. That’s exactly the same kind of rationalization that people like the Weather Underground and the SLA used at first, anyway – that terrorism was justified by their politics. In fact, a few like William Ayers and Bernadette Dohrn still claim that.

And, like clockwork, the nuts on the left are saying its all a right-wing conspiracy:

It’s nothng [sic] new for the right to CAUSE or INCITE the violence, or to trigger arranged mob responses, and make sure it all gets pinned on the Left. And the right seems to be able to get the FBI and law enforcement to do this for them as well. Anarchy, chaos, property damage, physical harm, mayhem, murder, militarized police with massive crowd control equipment, are all ‘options’ the right are eager to use to shut down any potentially energizing movement.

Do they even know how foolish this kind of stuff makes them look?

UPDATE

Well, now we know a leftist group, or individual, did it:

Capitol Hill offices received letters Thursday containing a photo of the Times Square military recruiting office before it was bombed and including the claim “We Did It.”

The manila envelopes contained a photo of a man standing in front of the recruiting station before it was bombed. The photo was the kind commonly sent as a holiday greeting card, according to a Democratic aide who spoke on condition of anonymity because the matter is under investigation.

The message on the card: “Happy New Year, We Did It.”

The envelope also contained a packet of approximately 10 sheets of paper that seemed to be a political manifesto railing against the Iraq war and a booklet. The aide didn’t know what the booklet was. A second aide, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said similar letters arrived in as many as 10 offices.

Lets all not forget this recent event.

I keep reading that the blast wasn’t that big, or they call it a “small” blast, yet in the early morning hours, I heard two interviews with people who either live in the same bldg. or one close by. A woman said she felt the blast in her apartment on the 41st floor and a man said that the blast shook him out of bed. That doesn’t sound like such a small blast to me, even though the damage doesn’t look that extensive.

I have to wait for more information on this. There are too many variables and a pattern of prior attacks that fit an MO.

It could be some nut off his meds, and escalting psycho who now has moved from arson/vandalism to bombs or even a stupid gang initiation.

It could also be something else in looking at the indymedia links. http://dc.indymedia.org/newswire/display/142455/index.php

Disgusting at what these brainwashed useless idiots on the left are doing and saying on thier own websites. Does it represent the whole left? I cannot say but these groups do have a lot of sway through their parent/puppet master groups which play big roles in the DNC (Move-on/ANSWER/Code Pink). And like moderate Islam, Democrats have not denounced and sought punishment for these insane leftists.

The thing is, if it was a leftist group like the above, they would be hopping up and down shouting about attacking “racist government paid killers” or some such to get props for the act.

My bet, not sanctioned by intrade, is that it is a lone wolf psycho ratcheting up actions in a serial bomber/arsonist fashion (a small act gets a ‘high’ for so long then must be increased in violence to get the next ‘high’).

Did it go off at 3:45 because they planned it that way, meaning they’re benign activists looking for attention; or because the timer was defective, meaning they’re deadly terrorists who made a slight error this time? Doesn’t that make a difference to the analysis?

.

See, they support the troops, the war in Afghanistan, and the fight against Al Queda, and this is just how they express that support and patriotism.

Anarchy, chaos, property damage, physical harm, mayhem, murder, militarized police with massive crowd control equipment, are all ‘options’ the right are eager to use to shut down any potentially energizing movement.

Ahh.. projectionism. The “anti-war” nuts get to protest whenever and where ever they want, but beware the “Bush Police State”!!! Except that President Bush never ordered police to disperse crowds and most of the “militarization” of the US Police force came in the 1990s, not since. The US has some of the most lightly armed police in the world, expecially the industrialized world. We also do not allow our military to be armed within the USA except under very special circumstances. This also separates us from many different countries. But that does not fit into the mindset of the above quote.

Since 2001, very few riot police have been ordered do much to halt these leftists. Before that, it was not the ‘right’ that deployed riot police against these “anarchists” (who are either very socialistic ‘anarchists’ or more just more “idiot” than “useful”), it was President Clinton who was forced to react to WTO protests and other leftist riots during his tenure.

And the fact these fools define their outlandish “protests” and riots as “energizing” is beyond absurd.

But those facts will not stop the leftists in thier visceral hatred and outright calling for killing those who oppose them (in the link I cited above).

Still waiting on what the NYPD/FBI will find. Last few news updates have not stated much (probably for more than a few good reasons).

I think one need look no further than the Radical Code Pink Wackos.

They should be banned access to the House and Senate as well.

I could see this coming a mile away.

Hey! Guess what?! An anti-war peace group is claiming responsibility for the bombing (yes, I should have precluded that with an oxymoron alert).

wow…shocker [not]

Well, we have a currently unknown person/persons taking credit for the bombing.

So currently it does indicate a leftist group attacked, yet another, US Military Recruiting Station.

I informed my pregnant wife that I will do all I can to not travel in uniform with her and our two sons (3 and under 1 yr old) as I am legally barred from carrying defensive arms while in uniform. This is all I can do to protect them as our cars are clearly marked and color coded indicating who and what I am.

Looking at the link I cited initially, with comments and the story from the attackers themselves, I can only conclude these peoples actions WILL escalate to fatal violence. What will happen when they start killing US Service Members and our families instead of ganging up on unarmed Soldiers? Will the attacks like the one on July 4th, 2007 in NJ become common? Will ANYONE on the left hold the very pro-violence “anti-war” groups accountable? History says no.

Still can not tell if this is a small lone wolf leftist group or part of a larger group (like ANSWER or Move-on) as there was no rent a mob showing up after the blast. I am revising my “bet” to say lone attackers backed up, or part of, a leftist “anti-war” group.

I set off a rather large firework on Park Avenue years ago (you can buy anything in China Town).

It made a horrendous noise in the concrete canyons at around midnight.

But it seems this was less a prank than someone making a political statement. That’s the troubling part.

How many stories do we have in the archives about violence directed at U.S. troops by left wing anti-war/peace activists?

Political violence is the first symptom of fascist tendencies.

Thanks…. Seeing a lot of trends in this story and with more info coming out about recruiters being targeted. Timing of the attacks in this story and far too many others (as in period of time after the surge success and failure of the Taliban’s 2007 ‘offensive’ not as in time of day) is disturbing and is full of indicators also.

Is there any chance at all that the perp. will be charged with terrorism? It’s past time to take the attacks on this country seriously. On another note, I heard on a thread being run by Jamie Colby(I’m not sure of the last name) that there will be a demonstration in Time Square on Sat 8 Mar from 1 to 4 pm by pro troop Americans. Wish I could be there. Jamie has a show on Sats on Fox News. She has helped Move America Forward in the fight against Berkley.

How do you categorize a small blast? In relationship to what, the damage caused or the size of the structure or is it small because the MSM wants us only to regard it in a small way.

The worst part is these types who do the bombings and are so anti-war wacko are breeders, the reproduce themselves. Back in the early 1970s, my husband was returning from his 3rd tour in Vietnam. The ship docked and it is always exciting to see the rails lined with sailors all in their dress whites. Family everywhere, lots of kids, everyone excited to see Daddy after a year’s deployment. Then 30 minutes later you are walking to where you parked the car. Kids dancing all around trying to be the one to get Daddy’s undivided attention, Dad lugging his sea bag, Mom concentrating on laughing and controlling the kids, when out of nowhere, the unwashed appear and together heft a trash can and fling the contents at Daddy. The contents of garbage and raw human waste. Not like a lethal bomb blast but something that scars you for life, especially your son who was only 5 at the time.

I know what you went thru Sara, my husband was in LA recruiting from ’68 to ’71. He couldn’t wear his uniform to work. He had to change when he got there.

Those pieces of garbage aren’t worth the sweat off our husbands’ a**es! The worst cases of arrested development I’ve ever seen.
