William F. Buckley Jr. Dead at 82

One of the architects of modern conservatism passes away!

I had the privilege of meeting him in Ohio in 1982 (photo right) shortly after the death of John Ashbrook, another founder of the modern movement and my employer (that’s an Ashbrook for Senate button on my lapel below the Ohio flag pin).

I wish I could remember what we talked about, but I was too nervous.

We thank God that men like William F. Buckley Jr. were born and able to inspire us all with thier vision, insight and towering intellect.

I posted this on the CQ blog, but would like to repeat it. In 1955, I was a Junior at the University of Detroit, and was a “wind bag” liberal like many college students. I actually got my hands on one of the first issues of WFB’s National Review, and there after was an avid reader. Between Bill Buckley and my moderate and even conservative professors in the College of Commerce and Finance I became a real conservative, a knowledgeable conservative for the rest of my adult life.

As a result, I was proud of serving as an officer in the United States Navy for four years, following my graduation from college, always proud of my country during my adult life [except for a few instances during the Carter Administration] unlike Michelle Obama.

Bill Buckley was a great man, a great intellect, led this country into the 1980’s with unprecedented respect [RR my hero], and will be greatly missed. RIP WFB!
