At the very early stages of the Surge, an operation referred to as the Baghdad Security Initiative (or Security Plan depending on the translation) took place. The evening of the 1st day of that mission, a B1b overflew our FOB next to the old Ba'ath Party HQ. The plane flew around for quite some time in a very menacing airshow.

One minute, the craft was doing figure 8s, the next, loops dropping flares, the next afterburner climbs, then pushing Mach 1 at low level, and then moving in seemingly impossibly tight turns for a plane so large. An airstrike happened when the plane was leveled off, but it was impossible to see if the B1b dropped it or not.

While the plane was performing, ground units and gunships roamed the city and took out terrorist "safehouses", which in turn led to even more intell coming in for the later phases of the Surge. It also was the coming of age test for some Iraqi Army and Police units, which are now fully functional.
