John McCain Big Winner in Iowa

Posted by: Mike's America @ 9:02 am in Politics  | 1 views

We now have an exciting free for all!

Huckabee’s big win over Romney in Iowa weakened Romney in New Hampshire and did more than anything else, other than a clear McCain victory in the Iowa Caucus, to boost an already surging McCain campaign in New Hampshire where he has traditionally been well organized.

In November, when John McCain’s campaign appeared doomed, he announced that he would win New Hampshire. At the time his campaign appeared to be on life support and I recall wishing him “good luck” at a houseparty here thinking he had little chance to pull it off.

McCain is now in the lead in New Hampshire according to the Real Clear Politics Averages and has some good momentum coming out of Iowa, even with a 4th place finish.

Some of the folks who might have gravitated towards Romney as McCain’s campaign floundered earlier this year may now return and bring needed cash and fresh enthusiasm in the mad dash towards the first primary on Tuesday, January 8th.

But don’t count Romney out. He can pull out his personal checkbook and donate a huge amount to his campaign for ads and get out the vote efforts. That didn’t work so well in Iowa, but New Hampshire isn’t a caucus where only the really motivated turn out to participate.

Enthusiasm for Obama, the first African-American to win a major political contest, may also attract New Hampshire independents that McCain was counting on to put him over the top.

Iowa Result Makes Horse Race More Interesting

As much as I wanted to see the Huckster defeated in Iowa, his victory does make the race more interesting for those who love a good horse race. If Romney had won Iowa, he would win New Hampshire then probably come down here and take South Carolina and the race would be over and DULL.

Now, Huckabee wins Iowa, perhaps McCain wins New Hampshire, and all the pundits will hop on plane and head to Michigan where Romney has long been favored to win, but Huckabee has some strong support (old polls are all that are currently available).

If Romney wins Michigan, where his father was a respected governor, we could have a three way race in South Carolina (polling average here) between Huckabee, Romney and McCain. Fred Thompson may also be making a last stand in SC. That would spread the field evenly for the big contest in Florida where Rudy Giuliani is standing guard (FL polling averages).

If Huckabee upsets Romney in Michigan, he’ll steamroller the competition in South Carolina and Rudy will be the only thing standing in his way to the nomination. So, if there is to be a stop Huckabee movement, it’s first firewall must be in Michigan. The last line of defense, which may be too weak to hold, is in Florida.

From here on out it could be a wild ride. Enjoy!

You missed this Marie:

” Fred Thompson may also be making a last stand in SC.”

Word is Fred is going to tour the state for the next two weeks and see if he can do better than tie for third place as he did in Iowa.

Again, a primary is very different from a caucus and Fred has friends here. I don’t see or hear any ads for him on tv or radio. Hopefully, he has enough money to be competitive.

This is sort of the same spin FOX put on the results last night – never mind that McCain actually finished just behind Thompson, he’s actually the ‘big winner’ in Iowa. I think McCain has a good chance to win in NH (unfortunately), but I think I’ll wait until he actually comes in first somewhere before I call him a ‘big winner’.

Much as I hope for something better, I don’t quite see a predictable dynamic that will help Fred beat Huckabee in SC. Fred finished at the low end of my expectations in Iowa, but still within the range that I was talking about, and stands a worthwhile chance to win the race but several things have to go right:

-McCain has to knock out Romney in NH and then self-destruct in SC and Florida.
-Rudy has to continue down a steep downward path so that by Super Tuesday he is not perceived as a viable candidate.
-A combination of Huckabee’s own persona and stupidity plus the rising tide of “what the heck are we doing electing a Bible-thumping populist opposed to limited government” has to send Huck into a downward spiral by ST.
-Paul has to be stopped anywhere before ST.

The odds of all of that going right are not that high, but Fred ought to just persevere. In spite of everything he has said I would fine-tune his message, but he is unlikely to listen to my sage advice. Anyway, I don’t see great demand for the conservative message these days, and that’s the biggest problem. Sill keep going Fred until and unless you can go no more. The country needs you badly.

I am reading a lot of comments on blogs inching toward Fred being the compromise candidate due to the faults with all the others. Not strong enough yet to make a trend but also people saying I wish somebody would poll me.

He seemed to have done well with the ontime entry into the race considering others have been working the race for even a couple of years and didn’t top it all out that should have come from that much early effort.

Huck is riding an Evangelical/populist statement rather than a gut felt win in Iowa. His Fair Tax position also got him some other support.

If Fred starts working up the polls (and he can almost skip NH since it is so libertarian why waste the effort, Paul will probably do better there than Iowa) his stock may rise.

I hear a lot say he could work across the aisle with the Dems but not give away the farm like Big Mac would.

Well Igor,

Not to bad to place 3rd in Iowa after jumping in the race late :-)

I’m just enthusiastic today because I was hoping Fred would place in the top 3 and he did. ;-) ~~

GO FRED GO!!!!

I’ve been for Fred before his exploration committee. Everyone says “I like Fred, we need Fred but….” It’s about time some folks took a stand. Are you picking a leader for the country or a winner in a popularity contest? Get out there good people, beat that Fred drum, wake the voters up!

It would really help if he could get a highly recognized and respected endorser.

He’s been my second choice for quite a while now. And even if he weren’t, I think I can recognize media spin when I see it.

Fred will be spending lots of time in SC for the next two week.

He’ll need to if he wants to pull it off:

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/sc/south_carolina_republican_primary-233.html

He’s been on the same downward slide that Rudy has been on since last summer.

And while I continue to hear McCain ads and get calls from Romney I see or hear nothing from Fred.

You folks may recall I covered Fred’s visit to SC in October:
http://mikesamerica.blogspot.com/2007/10/fred-thompson-visits-mikes-america.html

If he comes back to my neighborhood I’ll make an effort to see him again and tell him “Marie says hi.”

Marie, I love Fred so much it has almost become an obsession. Google “Igor R.” and “Fred Thompson” together and expand the shortened results and you will get the idea. Nevertheless, I have my own saying: stare reality in the eyes or it will bite you in the you-know-what. During the New Year’s celebration I was talking to three friends who I don’t see often and normally don’t discuss politics with about the race. I asked them who they were for, and every one was for Rudy. When I mentioned Fred, one looked at me funny and said “I want someone with a pulse”.

I also heard Rush talk this morning about something that I’ve been thinking about for weeks, that the country doesn’t seem to want a conservative now. I missed most of his monologue on the suject, and I’ll save my own thoughts for another time, but I think it’s true.

Marie, how could the illegal immigration champion McCain, who has almost destroyed the country about half a year ago do so well in Iowa without campaigning? He isn’t even a cult leader like Paul. People’s brains have turned to mush. They drink the Obama Kool-Aid when he says nothing but the word “change” repeated in every possible way. It has to take a random thing like the Bhutto assassination to focus people on foreign dangers. The President is expected to be a super-efficient action figure, that goes and fights destructive hurricanes like a true disaster-relief pro. Conservative message? Small government? Preserving the culture? The masses want help and security, and in their stupor they believe that the Federal Government is just the agency to deliver these to them.

Marie I think Fred can win, because his opponents all have serious faults. I don’t think the conservative message is enough, not this year. I remain hopeful, but I think realistic.

Of course these sewer rats just want to destroy Fred:

Fred should just say that he is in the race until the end, just so that these animals don’t get their wish.

Igor,

I was shocked Fred showed up even in 3rd place.

I am a Thompson Trooper, a FredHead, and I believe now that he knows he’s captured 3rd place in anything lol, he’s going to unleash something soon. Or maybe not.

Maybe his way of campaigning is working out, but when I saw his address to his supporters after the Iowa Results, he seemed full of fire.

I dont expect him to do well in New Hampshire, but I do In Soutn Carolina, he’s a Country boy in his territory in SC.

Igor: I’ll tell Fred you and Marie say hi if I see him. But maybe I should give Fred your phone number :)

Marie: Don’t get too excited about Fred in SC….Not sure it’s “his” territory. He’s been working the state (he didn’t just come and see me) and his numbers are still low.

It takes MONEY to raise a candidate’s visibility and Fred needs more dough to get some ads up here.
