prior to our massive funding of radical militant Islam in order to bloody the nose of Russia there was no real danger. 90% of the billions that went to fight the Russians in Afghanistan wnt to those who we now realize are our enemies. In 1976-1977 when I rode a horse in Afgahistan and the tribal areas the people were fervent muslims but had no hatred of "infidels"

Trouble in Pakistan

The situation in Pakistan is very unsettling. President Pervez Musharraf is caught between a rock and a hard place and is holding onto power by the end of his fingernails.

I think Musharraf's move was both self-serving and necessary. Originally, I thought that this was a purely political move, intended to over-rule the supreme court, and I had a bit of sympathy for Chaudhry, the Chief Justice. However, since information has come out talking about Islamist sympathies on the court, I just have to hope Musharraf comes out on top with his little coup. One sign that this is being done more in response to Islamism than in response to the growing spectre of illegitimacy haunting Musharraf has been B. Bhutto's relative silence on this whole matter. That's good, especially if it's a signal that their alliance is still on.

Oh, and Musharraf has already stood for election. He won. The issue with the court was whether his election was legitimate, since at the time of the election, he still held the post of Army Chief of Staff. He said he would relinquish his Army post before taking office, making himself a civilian ruler, but it looked like the Supreme Court was ging to rule against him, declaring his candidacy invalid post-facto, and voiding his victory.

Part of the equation should also include the dozen or so failed assassination attempts against Musharraf. The attempts on his life were largely he chose to ally Pakistan with the US after September 11th.

I'm not bothered at all by Musharraf's emergency declaration. His country has been on the knife's edge for years and needed to crack down completely on the Islamic extremists.

Let's hope he has the power and the ability now to do what many of us have been urging him to do for years.
