The mere fact that I had to google to find out who this "Values Voters" group was proves that you're really stretching, Other Ed.

Nice try, no cigar.

Who does this guy think he's kidding?

Regarding Arthur Sulzberger Jr., who replaced his father as the publisher in 1992, Bernard Goldberg writes in "Arrogance", pg. 64:

Pinch [the nickname of Sulzberger Jr.] turned out to be highly ideological in ways none of his predecessors had ever dared to be. If you're excessively open-minded, I suppose, you might be able to overlook, as a youthful indiscretion, the fact that during the 1960s he was arrested twice in antiwar demonstrations. But you'd probably have a real hard time forgiving his unapologetic support for the other side in the Vietnam War. As two ex-Times journalists, Alex S. Jones and Susan Tifft, reported in their recent history of the paper, The Trust, after one of his arrests his exasperated father asked Pinch the following question: "If a young American soldier comes upon a young North Vietnamese soldier, which one do you want to see get shot?" Pinch replied, "I would want to see the American get shot. It's the other guy's country."
That was a long time ago, you may say. And of course you'd be right. The problem is, Pinch still believes in all those old sixties notions about "liberation" and "changing the world, man." "He once remarked," as Jones and Tifft write, "that if older white males were alienated by his hipper version of the Times then 'we're doing something right.'"

The most dishonest thing in news media is the dinosaur notion that personal biases and partisan beliefs don't creep into ones work, where politics is concerned.

Since we're talking about fringe groups going too far -

When will the Republicans denounce the extremist group Values Voters? At the Presidential debate the group held for GOP candidates this week, event organizers invited the Church of God Choir, from Springfield, Ohio, to sing "God Bless America" -- except the lyrics were rewritten. Instead of a song about "the land that I love," and "home sweet home," this version condemns the country, saying we've all turned against God, and that He won't bless us.

Twisting and distorting the words of "God Bless America" is disgusting and an insult to all Americans. The GOP should be ashamed for supporting a fringe group like Values Voters.
