Democrats Conceding On Iraq Funds?

Loading

Like anyone thought this wouldn’t happen:

In grudging concessions to President Bush , Democrats intend to draft an Iraq war-funding bill without a timeline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops and shorn of billions of dollars in spending on domestic programs, officials said Monday.

While details remain subject to change, the measure is designed to close the books by Friday on a bruising veto fight between Bush and the Democratic-controlled Congress over the war. It would provide funds for military operations in Iraq through Sept. 30, the end of the fiscal year.

Democratic officials stressed the legislation was subject to change. They spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss provisions before a planned presentation to members of the party‘s rank and file later in the day.

As a Washington insider stated, these leaks may be a way to test the waters….get a read on reactions from the base.

If so, they just have to know the KosKiddies and DummiesU alumni will be going apes&%t any minute now.

Ok, let’s review the facts:
Dems don’t care about the war in Iraq-if they did, they’d go to the intel briefings, get daily briefings, read NIE’s, etc.

Dems need to oppose the war (and have since May 02) to get votes and support which could counter the then-huge support for fighting terrorists.

W lost support for the war, so dems no longer need to counter it, what they need….is more support, and in their minds the 06 midterms showed they’ve cornered the market on support for opposing the war. Hmmm, where to go for more support, money, voters, and volunteers?

W needs a bone to throw to R Congressmen

SO, he caves on immigration. Dems get new voters and supporters and money, and R Congressmen get a bone. In exchange Dems cave on Iraq since they know one thimg more than anything else…they never had a plan for their promised “New Direction in Iraq.” Better to cave and get something than to keep searching for the impossible; the impossible being a plan better than W’s and the generals’.

Yep, I think the immigration cave and the Iraq cave are related. A deal was made.

Dems will send bill without timeline to the Pres.
